Now I’m not going to say I was the biggest fan of Hayden Christensen (granted I haven’t seen him in much else except Star Wars), but in his defense he was kind of given a shit hand.
Anakin wasn’t necessarily written as a whiny bitch (though most of his lines are complaining), but he Lucas directed to the performance that was his (Lucas’) vision.
The big issue there with direction is that everything about the prequels feels melodramatic like one giant space soap opera and Anakin only has a limited range of emotions put all at the farthest edge of all spectrums. The idea of Anakin being ruled by his emotions is fine, but we never got to see him at neutral, so we just assume he’s this spastic kid who talks about a woman not being like sand one minute and killing a bunch of children the next…
Basically the “I can’t believe George Lucas” of your initial statement can be applied to a lot more than “ever hired him” but also things like “never gave us time to like Anakin” or “thought that all we wanted from a prequel was lightsabers” or “won’t release the theatrical cut of the original trilogy.”
So it goes…
